Question about the faerie rings: Let's say a faerie makes three and they're all active. Then they make a fourth. Would they be able to pick which of the others went inactive? Could they reactivate an inactive one? Could they have a network of them, but only have three options available at a time, and if so, how would that work?
What if the character was already a monster or a demon? I understand that their powers get nerfed but do they simply lose their powers or do they actually become humans?
About the non-human physical characteristics. For characters that are canonly monsters, are they also allowed to keep them after the nerfing like the above examples or must they also go since they are linked to their status as monsters?
Also, if we app monsters, how will you decide what they become? Are they automatically barred from re-becoming what they once were? Or will they automatically have to return to their canon monster form?
They will essentially become human. Although some physical characteristics can be kept (horns, fangs, tails, odd skin colors, etc) they won't have powers (or weaknesses) humans don't. Strictly appearance-wise, something like a Homestuck troll would not have to be changed - Transformers, ponies, and the like would have to be humanized. If you're unsure about your specific character you can always ask.
Canon monsters are not barred from becoming what they once were. If you don't want them to become the same type of monster you can opt out of that monster type, though. If you choose not to opt-out of that monster type, they may become the same thing but it's not guaranteed.
If I app a second character, am I allowed to request that they become something my first character isn't in addition to the five we want to opt out of? I only ask because there are exactly five I'm not interested in, but I also don't want to expose myself to playing something I've already done...
Question somewhat related to the one above me! If we as a player have no particular problem with playing any of the creature types but instead have problems seeing a character we apped as certain creature types can we have different opt outs for each character we app?
For example, we app character A and we couldn't see ourselves being able to play them as a demon, kelpie or vampire. So we have those as opt outs for character A. Then we app character B and we could see ourselves being able to play them as a demon, kelpie or vampire but them as a minotaur, wendigo or a werebear is something that we can't see ourselves being able to play with. So the opts outs would be the minotaur, wendigo and the werebear.
I'm sorry if that example made it more confusing, I just want to make sure we don't just pick five opts the first time we app and then those are your opt outs forever.
sorry if this was answered somewhere, but, similar to the "what if my character is already a supernatural entity" ... well, what if they, in canon already transform into something? would it be possible to have a similar morph in-game (though not exactly the same, so as to keep up the body horror) or would the mods have to choose something entirely different?
They could end up with something similar if there is something similar in the bestiary. They would not be able to keep their canon transformation ability or get an ability no one else has once they transform, though.
1 - Does this only include human NPCs, or could this also include other PCs? (with their permissions of course)
2 - How long would they be able to keep their control before losing their minds due to not feeding? A few days, weeks, or more like months?
3 - Do all feedings involve killing the human? I guess some of them are inevitable (eating souls and injecting venom seem rather obvious), but some of them involve blood or simply energy. Would they be able to only feed off partway and not kill?
2. Taking another comment here in mind, I'm thinking more like months so there's time to play out the struggle. I'll update the FAQ with exact details regarding this question once I work it out!
3. Yes, they would be able to feed part way (although unless the NPC is a willing host there's a good chance they'll tattle if allowed to walk away, so keep that in mind!)
question about if our characters become harpies! i know they can resemble any sort of bird optionally, but could they also resemble any fictional birds, especially if, in canon, they have some sort of connection to such a bird (i.e, a phoenix)?
They can't have any extra powers (ex: no literal fire wings) but they can physically resemble a phoenix or other sort of fictional bird from their canon, yes.
For the 5-10 character traits, would you prefer us to give a short paragraph of traits, with or without examples, or just list the traits alone for ease?
Example: "Character is considered very intelligent and cunning, but they're also very ruthless and self-centered, like when they blah blah blah" verses a simple "quick-witted, cunning, intelligent, self-absorbed".
Just a list of the traits alone is fine. I don't think explaining them is something I'd give revisions over or anything, but that's better done in the personality section.
I really love the opt-out system and the mods choosing the monster, but I was wondering if a system where the player has to choose between two chosen monsters might be better? The "this is it" end-all verdict is kind of intimidating...I mean, I don't want "here, have eight choices!" but having a final say as a player would be pretty great, I think.
Firstly, can monsters feed on eachother? Like if a vampire caught a fairy unawares, or a werewolf took down a minotaur, would it help their cravings?
If you were wounded, say lost an arm, before death, will it come back upon resurrection? Furthermore, what happens to the corpses of fallen player characters? Do they stick around or dissolve?
Finally... Do any monsters regenerate? Like vampires or werewolves, especially.
1. Yes, monsters can feed on each other, although make sure to get player permission. Another thing to note is that monsters are much stronger than humans but mostly equally matched against each other, so it's easier for them to feed on humans.
2. Wounds will be healed and severed limbs and the like will be regenerated upon resurrection. If the monster isn't killed, most wounds will heal without major scarring, but severed body parts will not grow back until they are killed and resurrected.
3. Corpses will be left behind until the fog rolls in, at which point they'll disappear into nothing.
There are no NPC monsters of the same types that PC monsters can be. There are unique NPC monsters that will be plot relevant but the locals don't know about them yet! I'll probably add this one to the main FAQ post.
If an apped character is already a monster on the list in canon, is it possible to get an auto-opt out option if you don't want them to become the same thing? If so, will it count toward the total opt-outs or can it be considered a freebie?
Like, if you app a vampire, can you get an option to opt out of vampire automatically without dinging your opt-outs?
Can a kelpie control if they're sticky or not? How do they get the person off afterwards if not?
If a character chooses to not kill until they lose their minds and are forced to, is that the end of the character or does feeding revert them back to sanity?
Yo! I've been enthusing about this game with some other interested parties and one sort of key area of reservation that's come up is the universality of the having to kill people thing, out of concern that it might get a bit samey. Like, personally I'm really, really keen on the whole struggling with your humanity and being beset by unpleasant compulsions thing, but it seems like there could be more room for interesting variety here than there is – that the struggle could be a bit more interesting if ending up killing someone was universally the risky outcome of not doing an unpleasant thing to sate your horrible hunger/compulsion/whatever, but that killing people/totally destroying their souls wasn't what everyone had to do in order to avoid that. Like possibly if more of the monsters had a setup where whatever method of feeding they have to do has some kind of horrible physical or mental effect on the victim, etc., but doesn't automatically result in their death unless they're out of control, instead of killing being the default base requirement for satisfying the compulsion in the first place?
Basically I'd be worried that giving in to your newfound monstrous side and killing people isn't so much of a big deal if it's a literal inevitability, and that there could be more interesting tension over the issue/between characters if it was more dependent on individual choices. Sorry if this is something you've already thought over/discussed as mods and decided would be impractical for different reasons!
Only a few of the monster types actually HAVE to kill in order to feed - a vampire could drain someone partially or a werewolf could chomp on a leg and nothing else, etc.
Taking your comment into consideration though, my original idea was to have monsters that need to feed around once a week - would only NEEDING to feed once every month or two with the option to feed more frequently make the struggle more interesting?
Is there an age limit on characters we can play? And if there is, how do you feel about aging up characters who are below that age limit in their canon?
Nope, no age limit. As long as they have enough canon to write a personality section with, child characters like Clementine from the Walking Dead game or Stan from South Park would be fine.
I have a question. If you have a fairly long list of monster types that you don't mind, but over six that you're not fond of, are you able to list in your application somewhere your top five or six choices to be taken into account?
I know the Faq said that the mods have the ultimate say, but I didn't know if you guys were willing to consider or keep in mind prefs at all, even if you guys can't always give in to them due to too many players going for the same monster types, etc. Or would that kind of thing in an application be unwelcome?
Is there any particular way you'd want to handle someone with amputated limbs? A character I'm considering has lost her legs below a certain point; would you prefer that be a part of whatever monster they become, or would you leave any limb regaining up to us?
About a day between adjacent towns (from Vandare to Bavan and the like). Double that for traveling from Vandare to Rota as they are farthest from each other.
Bavan to the Bruten Islands, Rota to the Mountain Range, and Kulen to Strand's watch would also take about a day. Farther locations would take longer.
Nearby locations (lakes and forests) take a few hours to travel to on foot from the nearest town.
I'm thinking about apping Seras here. She's already a vampire, but will she go back to being human and then change into one of the monsters, or will her vampirism stay (all she really has is the strength and speed from the point where I app her) on top of becoming another monster?
1. Are all the changes going to happen at once or will some changes, assuming mostly the mental ones, gradual start showing up before the two months are up.
2. Once the character changes after two months, are they stuck with whatever they chose from the optional list, or could these changes start appearing at a later date, especially if they start losing themselves more?
3. Is there a limit to the number of characters we can app from the same canon/series?
4. Given the setting, I'm already assuming it won't be possible, but might as well ask: are we able to canon update a character?
5. How are drops handled?
6. I know NSFW is mentioned in the rules, but it seems to only talk about violence and gore. Are things like sex allowed to be played out?
not a mod, but i can answer you the series/canon question, which is on the applications page:
You may apply for one character per app round and up to two characters total. Both characters must be from different canons. If this changes, we'll make an official mod announcement about it.
Is there a reason why werewolves and –bears are being treated as two different monster categories? Reading their description I don’t see much of a difference between them besides one being a bear and the other a wolf (even the text is mostly the same). It seems a bit unfair that you have to spend two opt outs on them if you’re simply not interested in any sort of were-animal in general.
When you say up to five different posts - do you mean five different posts literally, as in five instances of AC from five different posts, or five threads? Meaning you could have five threads in one log community post, or five threads in five different log/community posts?
Also, since this is how it works in my game and I'm not sure how it works here (not complaining if it's different, just wanna clarify); in the game I'm in, the comments you submit have to be from the month of AC (for here, let's say August), but the post itself could have been started at any time (back in June, say). If it's different posts and not different threads, do you want the posts used to be from the month of AC, or do only the comments come from the month of AC?
1. They have to be from at least two different posts and you can use a maximum of five threads. So, you can use threads 1 and 2 from post A, and then threads 3 and 4 from post B if you wanted, but no more than 5 threads in total. I'll change the wording on the FAQ to be a bit clearer.
2. Generally AC threads should be started in the month of the AC, but there will be a bit of grace for threads started near the end of the previous month.
How are medical sciences? On par with technological levels, or different? Also, do they have basic things like painkillers that we take for granted in the modern world?
Also, same question for food and drink. Are there things like soda and frozen food, or is it more Victorian/turn of the century in fare?
Medical science in Bavan is akin to a bigger city in the US around the 1950s. They do have painkillers and a few science-fiction type gadgets that may come up in plot later, but aren't quite as advanced as modern day. Vandare is about the same but lags a little behind Bavan, Rota and Kulen are more turn-of-the-century.
Vandare and Bavan will have processed foods and soda and the like, Rota does sometimes, Kulen really only has fruits, veggies, meat, and dairy from their farms.
Would it be possible to allow nagas a bit of shapeshifting? Not a whole lot, but possibly from their "default" of human with a serpentine tail, to something far more snake like for combat, with a more serpentine head etc, but able to turn back to the human with snaketail/fangs afterwards?
Being able to become something like this http://darknatasha.deviantart.com/art/King-Cobra-62378579 for sheer intimidation purposes might be a whole lot of fun.
